On Getting Out of Bed
How can we find the strength to carry on even in suffering? In On Getting Out of Bed, Alan Noble brings you a personal essay on the burden and gift of living.
Why We Live
While mental illness is the broad and direct subject matter of this book, Noble also has in mind those who face depression, anxiety, and despair. He asks all of us, who have suffered with mental afflictions in one way or another: why live?
Noble finds purpose and meaning in all human beings being created in the image of God for the purpose of giving God glory. Getting out of bed is an act of worship, and Noble makes a compelling case for why and how this is true.
Grace for Dark Days
I was most moved by Noble’s focus on community. While we may present burdens for our family and friends, they are meant to be shared. We need each other. For me personally, I felt the privileges that I have to be a son, a brother, a husband, and a father. They are responsibilities I can gladly bear.
This book is timeless, while also being timely in a world that increasingly devalues human life. It is inspiring, moving, and deeply spiritual. It is a witness to beauty in this world, and a testimony to the truth that God’s grace is enough — even for our darkest days.
