Five Tips for a Thriving Young Adult Ministry

In my Recommended Reading this week, I shared a link to the article Why Young Adult Ministries Don’t Work Well in Asian American Churches by Thomas Hwang.
I agree with most of his proposals and solutions. I have seen my church go from a dying young adult ministry to a thriving young adult ministry, and I would like to offer what I have seen that seemed to work.
1. Young adults must find their identity in Jesus - not in their job or relationship status.
This needs to be reinforced by the preaching and how the rest of the congregation treats young adults.
2. The fellowship group must be centered on God’s Word.
Priority must be placed on preaching, not on fellowship groups or social gatherings. In this way, friendships can be built on something that will never change.
3. Teach the importance of training the younger generation.
The time and money associated with young adulthood should be reinvested for gospel purposes, not hoarded and kept in storage for selfish gain.
4. Build bridges to connect with the older generation.
Let them serve together, be on the same committees, and provide avenues for mentorship and discipleship.
5. Let the young adults lead the church.
Give them the opportunity to be church officers, head-up the leadership in church ministries, and venture into new areas of service.
