Born a Baby
Jesus was born a baby. While there is not much documented in the Biblical account, we can fill in the gaps of some of the adventures of Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus.
Here is a somewhat comical list of things I noticed from the Biblical text about baby Jesus, especially after becoming a father.
1. Jesus needed to be swaddled.
And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. (ESV)
How beautiful is it that the God who holds the cosmos together had to be held by his parents as a baby boy? What a mystery.
2. Jesus was circumcised.
And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. (ESV)
I am sure there was an unmistakable cry. Even as a baby, his parents helped him obey what was commanded in Gen. 17:12–14; 21:4; and Lev. 12:3.
This might have been the first instance of pain brought about on Jesus. This pain was brought about him willingly by his parents, and in his perfect obedience as a baby he fulfilled what was commanded in the Law.
3. Jesus was marveled at by his parents.
And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. (ESV)
Simeon said that Jesus was the Lord’s salvation, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to Israel (Luke 2:29-30). While Jesus was just like any other baby, he was also sovereignly blessed. The hopes and dreams of his parents could not compare to what God had in store. And it is a story that we all get to share.
