Many Made Righteous

Three Connected Characters in the Story of Salvation

Aaron Lee | February 7, 2025 | AWANA | Romans 5:19

Introduction

Did Jesus have to obey his parents?

1. The Man Who Disobeyed

For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. (Romans 5:19)

The man who disobeyed is Adam.

The Bible has many ways of defining sin. Here it is defined as disobedience. In other places, it’s called a trespass. It’s a breaking of rules. Just as Adam disobeyed God in the garden, so we disobey God’s laws in his Ten Commandments and in the Bible.

See your sin. Our sin is disobedience and we deserve to be punished. When we disobey God, we deserve death.

2. The Man Who Obeyed

For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.

The man who obeyed is Jesus.

Philippians 2:8 says that he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death on the cross. He lived his entire life as obedient. Some people think that salvation only occurs at the cross. That’s only half true. Jesus’ entire life of obedience accompanied salvation.

See your Savior. For his entire life, from childhood to an adult, surrounded by sinners, he perfectly obeyed. His obedience is what makes his death on the cross acceptable to God for our salvation.

3. The Many Who Are Saved

For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous.

The many are mankind.

To be “made” does not mean created or changed — but it means to be deemed or ordained. It means to be called. Those who trust in Jesus don’t live perfect lives, but they are seen as righteous in the eyes of God.

See yourself. Will you trust in Jesus and be counted as the many made righteous?

Big Idea

Sinners who trust in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection will be saved.

Conclusion

Jesus did have to obey his parents. And he did it perfectly. But most importantly, he perfectly obeyed his Heavenly Father to secure our salvation.
