Known and Loved

How God’s Omniscience Leads Us to Jesus

Aaron Lee | October 4, 2024 | AWANA | Psalm 139:1-3

Introduction

[Discuss this question with your leader: Who knows you the best?]

Recently in AWANA we’ve been learning all about God. We’re going to learn about God’s omniscience – how God knows everything. The Bible is very clear that God knows everything. As a matter of fact, that’s what it means to be God. There is nothing hidden from him, and he is in charge and in control of everything. Nothing happens without his permission.

Since God knows everything, it also means that God knows everything about you. This is what we’re going to learn about today. Here are three observations about God’s omniscience.

1. God Knows You Individually and Personally

The first way God knows you is that he knows you individually and personally:

1 Lord, you have searched me and known me! (Psalm 139:1)

In this verse, God is not searching in terms of looking for us. This verse says that God has searched you. Meaning, he has studied and examined you. While the Church is a big group of people, God looks at us individually. And when the Bible uses the word know, it does not mean you know about someone. It means that you are known on a personal, intimate level.

Application

God wants to have a relationship with you. We should also come to know God by reading his Word.

2. God Knows Your Thoughts and Actions

The second way that God knows you is that he knows your thoughts and actions:

2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. (Psalm 139:2)

God knows the things that you do, like sitting down and standing up, going to bed and waking up. God even understands your thoughts. You don’t need to explain things to God. He knows exactly what you mean.

Application

Don’t hide anything from God because he knows your heart. Confess your sins and also give him your hopes.

3. God Knows Your Comings and Goings

The third way that God knows you is that he knows your comings and goings:

3 You search out my path and my lying down; you are acquainted with all my ways. (Psalm 139:3)

I’m using comings and goings as a way to say God knows where you are now and where you will be in the future. This is your path. It’s your journeys and travels in life. And God is acquainted with your ways, meaning he is familiar with your ways.

Application

Trust God with your life – past, present, and future.

Gospel

The thing about God knowing everything about you is that he knows the good and the bad. The Psalmist even says that when God sees sin in our lives, we should ask him to lead us in the right way to live:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! 24 And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! (Psalm 139:23-24)

Ultimately, the right way to live can only be found in the life of Jesus. Allow God’s omniscience to lead you to Jesus:

8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

Even though God knows everything about us, he came closer and gave us Christ. Admit you are a sinner, believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross for your sins, and confess him as the resurrected king over your life.

Big Idea

God knows and loves you.

Conclusion

I hope that after this message, you believe that God really does know you the best. But even more, I pray that you will know that God loves you best as well.
