Go and Make Disciples

Three Motivations for Missions

Aaron Lee | January 26, 2025 | FCBCW Children’s Worship | Matthew 28:18–20

Introduction

Who is Christianity for? Is being a Christian for Americans, for Chinese people, or more?

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Mt 28:18–20)

1. Power

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Mt 28:18)

The first motivation is the power of Jesus. He has all authority. Authority means to have power and the ability to rule. Like a king. Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth. His authority is everywhere. He is not like earthly kings or presidents that just have authority over one place. Jesus has authority over all.

Application

Will you live with Jesus as your ultimate authority?

2. People

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Mt 28:19-20)

The second motivation are the people of Jesus. Jesus tells us to go to all nations – and to reach all the people in these nations. The nations includes Jews and Gentiles. All peoples – including those who are pagan.

Application

Will you see all people as needing Jesus?

3. Presence

“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Mt 28:20)

The third motivation is the presence of Jesus. Jesus says that we have all assurance that he will be with us to accomplish his mission. No matter where we are and how far we go – we are never alone in sharing the gospel.

Application

Will you go boldly with Jesus’ presence?

Big Idea

Christians live on mission to make disciples of all nations because of Jesus' power, for his people, and with his presence.

Conclusion

Who is Christianity for? Is being a Christian for Americans, for Chinese people, or more? The good news is for everyone!
