Culture Points to Christ

Culture Is Everywhere. Use It to Point to Christ.

This is the title of an article at TGC by Dennis Greeson and Benjamin T. Quinn. They say:

“We should instead imagine culture as a language we all speak. It’s communication. We constantly receive culture and are formed by it. Every book, song, dinner, and habit can become a channel of blessing to the world. Each offers an opportunity to witness to the hope of Jesus.”

I appreciate this because, while I think there are certainly aspects of culture we should avoid, the Christian life is also about living according to God’s greater plan. As salt and light, we reveal the reality of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection to the world around us. In this way, they connect the culture we live in with the mission of God.

All of life can be an illustration that illuminates the truth and beauty of God. The more specific ways I can talk about Christ and what’s in His Word, the better.

I do not want to be afraid to speak to the culture from the Bible when I preach and teach in my church. As my kids get older and see and learn about the world, I want to be a parent who points them to Jesus. And as someone who has grown up in the culture—and as someone engaged in the online culture—I need to watch my thinking as well.

I am resolved to create culture as much as I can—in my home, in my church, and in the world.
