You Are Secure

In You Are Secure, Aimee Joseph offers a deeply encouraging devotional study from the book of Colossians. Through her insightful reflections and practical applications, she helps readers grasp the profound truths of this epistle while drawing attention to how these truths shape our identity and security in Christ.

Identity and Faith

One of the standout features of this book is its design, which feels fresh and modern, almost magazine-like. This unique layout makes the book easy to engage with and invites interaction with the text in a new and refreshing way. It’s not just a devotional; it’s an experience that draws you in, encouraging you to reflect and apply the principles of Colossians as you read.

Joseph excels at explaining complex theological concepts in concrete, relatable terms. It is clear that she has studied and applied this text to her own life. She helps unpack ideas like identity and faith, making them accessible and practical for everyday life. One memorable takeaway from the book was her comparison of the Gospel to the alphabet. Joseph writes that the Gospel is not just the “ABCs” of the Christian life, but the “A to Z” — it is the foundation of our faith, the ongoing source of our sanctification, and the lens through which we view all of life. This was a powerful reminder that the Gospel is not just for the beginning of our Christian walk, but for every step along the way.

Prayer

Prayer is a central theme in Colossians, and Joseph emphasizes its importance throughout the book. She encourages readers to find “extra pockets of time” for prayer, rather than reaching for our phones or distractions. In a world full of noise and constant connection, this reminder to carve out intentional time with God was both timely and convicting.

What makes Joseph’s writing even more engaging is her personal touch. She shares her own experiences and struggles, including a particularly vulnerable moment when she felt overwhelmed while praying for her son. This honesty makes her writing relatable, and her transparency encourages readers to bring their own worries and prayers to the Lord with a sense of power and security. I found myself challenged to pray with more conviction, especially for my children, that they would find their ultimate security in Christ alone.

Stand Firm

Joseph also does a wonderful job of drawing out the rich theology in Colossians. She explores key themes such as reconciliation, adoption, sanctification, and perseverance — all central to the believer’s security in Christ. These theological truths not only provide a solid foundation for understanding the Christian life but also serve as a wellspring of encouragement as we face trials and uncertainties.

One of the most powerful aspects of Joseph’s writing is her call to stand firm in the faith. She speaks directly against the shame that so often holds believers back and challenges us to confidently speak the truth of the Gospel to one another. Her exhortation to speak with boldness about the security we have in Christ was a refreshing and needed reminder in a world where many believers struggle with doubt or fear.

Unshakeable

While marketed towards women, I found Joseph’s writing to be perfectly relatable. Personally, I’ve been wrestling with concerns about the security and future of my family, and this book was a timely reminder that our security ultimately rests in Christ alone. The final chapter of the book was particularly impactful, as Joseph invites readers to reflect on their own unique callings, gifts, and experiences. She asks, “What are the specific ways God has equipped you to serve Him?” This question reminded me that my role as a father and my ministry are not random; they are God-given, part of the plan He has for my life. It was a profound reminder that God is sovereign in the small and big details of our lives.

After reading You Are Secure, I feel better equipped to lead my family, anchored in the unshakable security that is ours in Christ. This book has not only deepened my understanding of Colossians, but it has also strengthened my confidence as a father and a believer, knowing that my security is not in my circumstances or abilities, but in the finished work of Christ.
