Ten Words from God

Do the Ten Commandments apply to Christians today? In Ten Words from God, Gordon J. Keddie gives an exposition of the Ten Commandments.

Covenantal Context

Keddie begins by explaining that the context of the Ten Commandments is actually a covenant. Moreover, they point us to Jesus by showing God’s righteousness, our need for a savior, and the Lord’s pattern of holy living in Christ by faith. The commands still apply to us today as we strive to live consistently and constantly as people of God’s covenant of grace.

I was most interested to learn of the five features of images when dealing with idolatry. Images are imaginative and inviting, feel more involving and inclusive, seem more immediate and in-touch with God, distract and divert our focus from God himself, and diminish and destroy the glory of God. Instead of images, God calls us to a life of faith and to trust his Word.

Pointing to Jesus

I was most excited to see how the Ten Commandments point us to Jesus. It is pointedly shown in Chapter 10 — how Jesus and the Sabbath intertwine. Looking at the 4th commandment as well as Matthew 12:8, we see how Jesus gives us ultimate freedom. There is freedom to be found in salvation, but also freedom from all of life’s challenging and difficult circumstances. This book will encourage and challenge you to live a more faithful Christian life while also depending more on Christ.

This book is an incredible look at the Ten Commandments. It will give you a different perspective from a list of dos and don’ts. It will reveal to you deeper meanings and give you beautiful insight. Most importantly, it will give you a glimpse of Jesus as the full and fulfilled Word of God — one we can rest and rely on.
