Simply Trinity

Does the doctrine of the Trinity need to be revisited? Have we convoluted Christian orthodoxy? In Simply Trinity, Matthew Barrett brings us back to the unmanipulated Father, Son, and Spirit.

Precision and Passion

In nearly 350 pages, Barrett writes with precision and passion to teach the Trinity of the Bible. The book is divided into two parts. First, discussing how we drifted away from Biblical orthodoxy. Then, furnishing a roadmap to help us find our way back home.

Key topics are covered in this extraordinary work, including paternity and filation, eternal subordination, and the concept of spiration. Barrett excellently uses several tools at his disposal, including clear definitions, questions and answers, and understandable explanations. For those, like me, who find these concepts difficult to grasp – Barrett key points and highlighted features while presenting subjects in relatable ways.

Three Takeaways

I was left with three takeaways after reading this book. To begin, I have a better appreciation for the work of our church fathers and their focus on creeds and confessions. Heresy is often subtle, and it must be combated with the declarative truths of sacred Scripture.

Next, I see the dangers of twisting doctrine to fit your own agenda. This is especially true in the pulpit, where we must be governed by God’s Word. Cleverness should never be chosen over clarity. When it comes to the Trinity, blasphemy can be a result of our inattention and apathy.

Finally, there is beauty in the mystery and revelation of the Trinity. The fact that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have been revealed to us is nothing short of amazing. That we can know God in an intimate way – and in a correct way when we cling to Scripture – is humbling. God has made himself known.

Trumpeting the Praise of Our Triune God

This is an important academic work in regards to recent trinitarian debates. It is a call to return to classic trinitarian theology. This book is a modern classic that trumpets the praise of our Triune God. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
