Loneliness

Where can we find hope for lonely hearts? In Loneliness, Lou Priolo provides practical remedies on connecting with God and others.

Biblical Living

This 64-page booklet is the latest entry in The Resources for Biblical Living series. These books address a wide range of practical life issues in a straightforward, down-to-earth, and, most of all, biblical manner.

Priolo is the founder and president of Competent to Counsel International and is an instructor with Birmingham Theological Seminary. He has been a full-time biblical counselor since 1985 and is a fellow of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors.

We All Need a Relationship with Jesus

What this book does is give you a biblical framework for understanding loneliness while helping you diagnose yourself and see where you can get help. The book begins with a loneliness inventory — a checklist to see what’s really going on in your life. He lists factors that contribute to or cause loneliness, and then gives 20 cures for loneliness. This book is saturated in Scripture, and Priolo applies God’s Word well.

At the heart of this book is that we all need a relationship with Jesus. Priolo asks pointed questions but he has a compassionate tone. He is quick to say that we must be spending time and seeking Christ in his Word and through prayer. The church is also championed as a place to find real, Christ-centered friendships.

Come to Christ

While not all cases of loneliness are caused by sin, I was surprised to see the certain attitudes and dispositions that can lead to them. Having a critical spirit and pride are two that come quickly to my mind. Priolo remains hopeful, giving very practical advice such as telling someone you trust that you are feeling lonely and focusing on how you can love others rather than on how others aren’t loving you.

Priolo encourages the reader to keep a loneliness journal and to get a medical checkup. After reading this book, I am more aware of loneliness in my own life and in the lives of others. And I am motivated to come to Christ, a friend of sinners and one who is closer than a brother.
