Culture Making

What can Christians do about our culture? In Culture Making, Andy Crouch helps us recover our creative calling. Crouch defines culture as what we make of the world. Culture is what we were made to do. Culture is inescapable — and that’s a good thing.

I was most challenged to see how thinking of culture only in terms of worldview falls short of the ability to reshape the world. Culture is not changed simply by thinking. Instead, the only way to change culture is to create more of it. What I most appreciated was how Crouch sees us as culture keepers and culture makers. In particular, Christians are called to be both cultivators and creators. This is how we can steward culture.

God’s Coming Kingdom

Chapter 5 takes on a brief interaction of Christianity and culture, like the days of the Renaissance period as well as Contemporary Christian Music. The middle of the book looks at the Bible and culture. Jesus is the culture maker. We see the dramatic cultural effects of his birth, life, death, and resurrection. And while God is the one who changed the world, he uses people to do it.

The book ends by looking at the reality of power in changing culture. Power is a call to service and stewardship. Finding our calling will help us see where God wants us to be, and there is grace in our failed attempts at redeeming the culture. This book will help you better understand the world, and give you a glimpse of God’s coming kingdom.
