Twelve Practical Tips To Teach You How To Pray (Part 2)

The promise of prayer does not mean that God will change very difficult thing in your life. But he will preserve you for as long as he has work for you to do, and he will transform even the difficult circumstance by his presence and perhaps by the presence of others whom he sends to be with you. - James Montgomery Boice

“I’ll pray for you!” How many times have we made this promise? Are these empty words? Has this become a hollow phrase simply to provide comfort? Are we really praying?

Praying for others is an important part of Christian community. We are commanded to pray without ceasing. If it’s already difficult to pray for myself, how is it possible for me to remember to pray for others?

7. Pray with your body.

Just like how raising hands and clapping are physical expressions of worship, raising hands and getting on your knees can be physical expressions of prayer. Challenge yourself to look a bit silly and be a bit uncomfortable as you express yourself to God.

8. Share your prayer requests.

It took me some time, but I am finally comfortable quickly sharing my most urgent prayer requests with many friends. I share prayer requests even when I am not asked to share them. I can quickly email family and message friends. My newsletter serves as a low-key prayer guide for how you can pray for me.

9. Ask how you can pray for others.

Make it a part of your regular conversation to ask how you can be praying for others. It does not need to be long and intimate. Asking for prayer should be quick and urgent. Show love for others in this way.

10. Pray immediately for others.

When people share their prayer requests or something that they are going through, ask if it is okay to pray for them immediately. There is nothing more comforting than knowing that God hears our prayers and the prayers of others.

11. Write down your prayers.

Journal your prayers. Not only does this help with focus and clarity in prayers, but it gives you a way to remember and see how God has been faithful over time.

12. Share when God has answered prayer.

Let others know when God has answered your prayer. Thank people for praying for you. This should encourage others to know that uses prayer to work for your good and His glory.
