My Career in Healthcare Informatics
I was recently asked about my career. I am an RN Clinical Analyst, and this is my story.
How I Got Into The Field
I originally wanted to become a Nurse Anesthetist. I had directed my nursing career with that as the goal. I was accepted to anesthesia school and resigned from my position as an ICU nurse. I attended anesthesia school for one year, but ultimately found it as a career that would not be a good fit for me. So I had the choice to go back to bedside nursing, but I decided to pursue a career in informatics instead.
I did have some previous experience with healthcare informatics. I was known as a “super-user.” I had provided in-services related to computer charting, and I had experience teaching during skills days. When I saw an opening for a position as a Clinical Analyst, I applied, was interviewed, and got the job.
Every Job Has Difficulties
The switch from bedside nursing to hospital administration is clear and defined. I lost a lot of camaraderies that is naturally built at the bedside. There are many legal responsibilities that come with the work. Dealing with physicians and nurses may be difficult due to the positional authority and relational accountability.
There is also technical knowledge and workplace politics that must be learned. I have also taken on Employee Health and HR roles at the hospital to support our current staff.
A Positive Trajectory
Overall, however, I am very happy with my current career. Healthcare Informatics is a growing field that is projected to increase in importance as technology becomes more advanced and supportive of the healthcare system. The 9-5 schedule (or 7:00 AM -3:30 PM in my case) is perfect for family life and I still value having every weekend free for friends, family, and ministry.
I enjoy the routines but there is always something challenging and new. Being an administrator has its perks and there is a lot of independence and freedom that comes with my position.
Careers Change
It is fitting to remember that careers change. Life circumstances change. I am thankful for God who guides my steps and directs my paths. He has provided for me. Fulfillment does not need to come from how much money you make. Strive after Christ, seek his glory, and let his goodness fill your life.
