Be Thou My Vision

Singing Seminar

We held our first Singing Seminar at church on Sunday. This was an idea I tossed around with Pastor Terrence in order to support congregational singing. We only opened it up to those in student ministry (junior high through college) to keep it small and encourage followup. Ray started the session with a short devotional on why congregational singing is important, and Angie followed up with practical teaching to improve singing from the pews. We had time for a quick Q and A session, and we ended the seminar by singing Be Thou My Vision.

Recording

The audio recording was quick and dirty. I recorded the singing using my iPhone, Jess’ iPhone, and the voice recorder I use for capturing sermons. Angie was in front with the piano, and all of the vocalists were facing her direction. I placed the iPhones to the front left and front right of the vocalists, and I placed the voice recorder directly in front of Angie.

Production

I produced the audio using Logic Pro X. I panned the iPhone recordings hard left and hard right, and I kept Angie’s vocal straight up the middle. I added some reverb to Angie’s vocal. I was getting some buzzing from Angie’s mic, so I dropped the volume on that track during the instrumentals.

Listen

You can listen to the recording on YouTube. And for more, check out Be Thou My Vision from the album All To Jesus To Receive with Phillip and Angie, as well as Be Thou My Vision from the Worship Sessions album with Jesse.
